I am obsessed with this so far. Yoder has this wry, straightforward way of writing that reminds me of Ottessa Moshfegh and Melissa Broder. Big fan.
Per usual, Slaughter penned a plot that is creepy as hell, full of tension, and keeping me guessing at the end of every chapter. I honestly have no idea who is going to make it to the end of this book alive.
I'm on page 60 of this 1995 Taiwanese Sci fi novel set in a 22nd century in which humanity moved all animal + plant life it valued to live on the ocean floor. We've got climate change, fraught mother-daughter relationship, gender queerness, eating the finger of one's mirror image (???), high tech skincare that must break a few privacy laws, amphibious sniper cyborgs...you have to read this.
The idea that early motherhood is SO hard with a useless husband and judgmental peers that you literally turn into a dog? Sign me up!!! I’m loving this book and it’s unique POV, storyline, and take on motherhood.
This book has all the promiscuity, self-destructive behaviour and family dysfunction of classical mythology. While the overarching storyline veers into melodrama in unrealistic (but entertaining) ways, there are some beautiful intimate moments that really resonate.
All I know is that there's no way the writer/director of the adaptation will get across what JCO is so eloquently putting down about Marilyn, American celebrity, and men.
